Please read the policies below before calling for an appointment.

WE BUY ON DAILY BASIS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY!

Our Policies (Updated January 1, 2019)

The Basics

  • All items must be clean and freshly laundered. If an item cannot be washed, please clean it thoroughly with a damp cloth or sanitizing wipe. Please don’t forget to clean the bottoms of shoes.

  • No items will be accepted from smoking households.

  • No items with stains, tears, missing or loose buttons, fading, broken zippers, etc.

  • Buttons and zippers must be buttoned and zipped.

  • Loosen all elastic adjustable waistbands inside pants, shorts, etc.

  • Neatly fold items and place in bins, laundry baskets or paper bags. Do not bring items in plastic bags or on hangers.

  • Gear must be clean, complete and in working condition with all necessary parts and pieces, including instruction manuals and batteries. If missing a manual, please check the manufacturing website for a printable copy.

  • Gear must be fully assembled. We will ask you to show us how everything operates, so please know how to set it up and break it down.

  • Check items for recalls. Look up the item on the manufacturing website or at the Consumer Product Safety Commission. We cannot accept any recalled items unless the item has been repaired in accordance with the recall.

What We Buy and How We Buy

Our guiding policy for buys is simple: We purchase what we believe will sell in the store. Please be understanding if we cannot purchase your items.

Due to our customer's expectations, we’re careful about what we accept and must limit our selection to brands with proven quality and durability. Popular brands include Tea Collection, Mini Boden, Patagonia, REI, Columbia, Hatley, Gap, Gymboree, Hanna Andersson, Ralph Lauren, See Kai Run, Keen, Crocs, UGG and Bogs.

Brands we typically do not accept include: Circo, Cherokee, Curfew, Sprockets, Faded Glory, George, Kids Korner and many other discount brands.

We do make exceptions depending on our current inventory, so if you are unsure about a specific brand or item, please ask.

We purchase:

  • Children’s clothing, sizes infant to 14. For various reasons, we are especially selective when purchasing infant sizes (0-24 months) and big kid sizes (12-14), so we will take only the cleanest, nicest, and most current styles.

  • Very gently used wooden toys and educational or activity-based toys.

  • Books published after 1985 in great condition.

  • Complete puzzle sets. We do not buy puzzle sets that are more than 75 pieces unless they are new in a sealed box.

  • Strollers, highchairs, pack-n-plays, electric swings, exersaucers, and other gear that is no more than 5 years old (exceptions may apply). Please call before bringing in such items to ensure we are accepting them at that time. Depending on demand, we may decide to either buy the item outright or consign it. Read below regarding consignment.

We do not purchase:

  • Children's products that may contain lead, such as children’s jewelry and painted wooden or metal toys.

  • Cloth diapers or underclothes.

  • Maternity clothes.

  • Flimsy or cheap toys, or toys that are easily broken into small parts.

  • Stuffed animals or toys that have buttons, eyes or noses or other small parts that are not securely fastened and could present a choking hazard for young children.

  • Recalled items (unless the item has been repaired in accordance with the recall).

  • Cribs or bedding.

  • Car seats or helmets.

You will be required to provide identification when we buy items or accept them for consignment. We will keep a record of your name and address, the type of identification provided, and the date and description of the items bought or accepted on consignment. This record-keeping requirement is per Oregon law (ORS 646 A.060).

Due to the number of items we process in a day, any items we choose not to accept, or that you decide not to sell, must be picked up within 24 hours of the offer. If this time limit is exceeded, the items become the exclusive property of Stone Soup. We apologize for being so strict about this policy, but we do not have the room to store unaccepted items. Thank you for understanding!

How You Get Paid

Unlike most consignment stores, we buy the majority of your items outright. That means you get cash or store credit immediately in most cases. It also means we are able to eliminate much of the work on your part – you don’t have to keep track of what items have sold or when you need to come in to pick up unsold items.

After carefully inspecting and processing your items, you will receive an offer of cash or store credit. Store credit values are 25% higher than cash offers. Keep in mind the store credit will expire 12 months from the issue date. You can accept either offer (cash or store credit) or choose to decline the offer. Your decision is final.

For some larger items, we will consider a consignment option. If we decide that you have an item that is appropriate for consignment, we will provide a Consignment Agreement for you to review. Consignment prices are based on the sales history of similar items at Stone Soup, the manufacturer’s suggested retail price and according to brand name, condition and style. Unlike our buying program, you do not receive payment for consigned items until the item is sold. When the item sells, you receive 50% of the selling price. All items eligible for consignment must meet the policies listed above.

When We Buy

We buy on a daily basis by appointment only!

FIRST TIME SELLERS. We limit new sellers to 30 items or less as we ask you to stay in the store during your appointment. This way, we can get you acquainted with our policies.

ESTABLISHED SELLERS. Established sellers are limited to one box or bin (laundry size or smaller) or two paper bags. Your name and phone number must be on all containers. You can schedule either a DROP-OFF or a WAIT appointment.

DROP-OFF appointments allow you to go about your day while we sort and process your items. Please drop off your items before 12 noon. We will call you later in the day with an offer.

WAIT appointments allow you to shop while we process your items. Let us know what time frame works best for you. This appointment works great if you live outside of town.

Here are some general guidelines regarding the purchase of seasonal items:

Spring: January to March

Summer: April to June

Fall: July to September

Winter: October to December

Swimwear is welcomed year-round.
